MAKING SMARTBRO FASTER
Dear OHJ Members,
Good day! I assume the reason you’re here is because you want to make your SmartBro connection faster or maybe you just want to read. I’m sorry for those non-SmartBro users because as the title says, this guide is for SmartBro users only. I’m doing this because I want to help fellow coders of our OHJ family to have good or fair iconnection. I hope this will really help… (period). You’ll have faster iconnection in no time. He..he.. I don’t want to elaborate much so let’s get to the point.
WARNING:
I will not be responsible for any damages or loss that you may have when following this guide. If your antenna gets broken, call SmartBro customer support and have it replaced. Just make sure you don’t tell them anything about the canopy antenna tweaking or about this guide. Remember you’re doing this on your own discretion and I’m just here telling you something that might also be good for you as it has been with me. I really hope this will also work for you and also enjoy the benefits it has given me.
NOTE:
- This is not a guide about using a software which tweaks some configuration to make iconnection faster. Honestly I think those softwares I was referring will improve your iconnection just a little or even negligible you’ll never notice the improvement. (software – drivers – firmware – hardware) That’s how computers or digital machines work really compared to just software-hardware combination as thought by many.
- You are going to tweak the antenna’s firmware with this guide so be really careful because it can really damage or even destroy your antenna.
- This guide only works for SmartBro users with Motorola Canopy antenna installed and given its firmware is unblocked. I’m very sorry if you don’t qualify with these requirements. But you can try tweaking your own antenna from SmartBro other than Canopy using this guide though I don’t recommend it. As what I’ve said, it’s your own discretion.
- I’m currently using Windows Vista Ultimate as operating system and also do have some Vista Sidebar gadgets. As for those who are not using the same OS, I’m trying to make this guide as general as possible. If you have more specific questions about the guide, you can contact me.
1. First, you can test your current iconnection speed at http://www.speedtest.net/ or any related site prior to tweaking. It’s advisable to take this step so that you can see the difference before and after the tweaking. It’s also desirable to try this guide during the night or anytime the iconnection is at best. You can skip this step if you want.
2. Make sure you have the Motorola Canopy antenna installed from Smart. It looks like this.
3. Open an internet browser (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.). Type 169.254.1.1 on the address bar. This works fine with me but actually, the process is longer and more complex. I just want to give you the simplest processes I can give that worked fine with me, first. Just contact me if you don’t see the same image you can see below. I’ll update this guide if that’s the case.
4. If you can’t enter the canopy page, you’re antenna is blocked probably. I’m sorry I haven’t tried unblocking the antenna. I just post based on experience. It’s a dead end for you. For those who entered the page similar to the image above, good for you because you’re a minute or two away to finish line. Next, click “Configuration” as you can see in the left side. And then click one of the tabs named “Quality of Service (QoS)”. It should look like or similar to the image below.
5. The values you see on the latest image above are my own settings. I changed it every now and then. Just follow these settings I’m going to list because it’s the optimal settings. I know I can’t force you not to experiment with it later because you will. He..he.. I know now how OHJ people think. You can browse the other sections but bear this in mind; this is your antenna’s firmware. If you make even the slightest mistake in changing configurations, it can damage your antenna. Like I always say, it’s your own discretion.
Sustained Uplink Data Rate: 500
Sustained Downlink Data Rate: 500
Uplink Burst Allocation: 1500
Downlink Burst Allocation: 1500
6. Click “Save Changes” then click “Reboot” after some time. Then wait till the “Home” page loads. And that’s it!! He..he.. Congratulations if you reach this far!!
7. Wait there’s no.7 step. Check your iconnection again with the same site you used in the first step. See if there’s an improvement. You can also forget this step.
Additional Notes:
- For those users who has (Uplink + Downlink) Sustained Data Rate greater than 1000kbps. You’re very lucky. You can change it to any value you desire so long as they add up to the maximum value. Please do note that the optimal setting involves an equal uplink and downlink rate. For example: if you have a 6mbps aggregate, you can have 3mbps upload and 3mbps download. Very few users have bandwidth aggregate of more than 1mbps so consider yourself to be very lucky.
“I hope this will work for everyone with SmartBro as ISP! I already shortened the process as possible. If you have problems, I’ll update the guide for your sake. I’ll use the longer one. If you do have suggestions, comments or additional info, contact me or MsE and GE. Thank you for reading. I realized making a guide or a forum post is very difficult! He..he..”

Ken, go to the Home page of the Canopy firmware. Scroll down till you can see "Key Features Information: Maximum Throughput". I have a 1mbps aggregate in here so its optimal to use 500d and 500u. But if you're aggregate is more than 1mbps, just divide it for your upload and download throughput. Ex. 3mbps upload and 3mbps download for a 6mbps aggregate. If you have more than 1mbps aggregate, you're very very lucky. If you don't, you can always experiment with the values to attain maximum performance for your needs. You can actually have 2 configs during a day, one for daytime and 1 for nighttime. Basta ikaw na bahala timing ng settings mo! Also remember to put the maximum uplink/downlink burst allocation if it's not 1500. Have a good day!!! Take care!! _________________ I Luv 2 Luv!! |

For all SmartBro users who already accessed their canopy antennas:
Go to QoS page (Quality of Service). It's the same page as the downlink/uplink data rate values. Change "High Priority Channel" to enabled from disabled. I haven't really calculated its effect but it's important to set that to enabled especially if there are many SmartBro users in your area. It will help you in some way. It will prioritize your channel. I'm sorry I forgot to include this in the guide... _________________ I Luv 2 Luv!! |

For Jez:
Jez, just pm me some time when we're both available. I'll give you the more complex version of the guide. Let's pray it will work for you. Sayang naman if you can't access your antenna. We'll talk later. Take care always!! _________________ I Luv 2 Luv!! |

| Air Jordan Shoes were a part of the Nike, Inc. family until late in 1997 Nike unveiled a new marketing plan and Jordan became its own sub-brand of Nike. To mark this change, the new Jordan Brand released the Air Jordan 13, Air Jordan Team, and Air Jordan Trainers. From this point on, Jordan Brand products no longer featured the Nike name or Nike Swoosh, and their only connection to Nike,Inc is a fine print address for Nike headquarters to be used for insurance purposes. |
